What is a Luau?

A lu'au is a traditional Hawaiian feast complete with local entertainment. Luaus generally begin at dusk, and include flower or shell lei greetings, traditional poi dishes made from the root of the taro plant, and Kalua Pork, which is a roast pig cooked in an underground oven called an Imu. And don't forget the unique and memorable music, song and dance of the islands.

The incredible Imu ceremony, which is the unearthing of the roast pig that has been cooked underground all day marks the beginning of the festivities and is not to be missed. Luaus usually have their own Royal Court who begin and end the celebration with an official royal opening and closing.

Luau entertainment usually includes the traditional Hawaiian music of the ukelele and steele guitar, and Hawaiian Hula dancers moving with the style and grace of the ancients to the sound of drums and chants. Often times Luaus include the amazing Fire Knife Dance, a nighttime favorite.

There are primarily two types of luau entertainment, Polynesian and Hawaiian. The difference between them has much to do with their historical roots and the what is included by the Luau organizer.

Many luaus are held on a beach beneath the stars and swaying palms, but some are held in tropical gardens, amphitheatres or comfortable indoor luau theatres.

It is almost impossible to describe all the elements of a Hawaiian Luau in a single page. You really have to experience all the tropical wonder for yourself!

It is usually possible to make reservations for a Luau upon arrival in the islands, however many are so popular that booking ahead of time is recommended - some book weeks in advance during the busy season.

We have included luau phone numbers for your convenience on our comprehensive Luaus by Island page so you can begin to enjoy your Hawaiian vacation and luau as soon as possible!
